Spotlight on…Caroline Mayers
Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) & VisitNorwich

With over 20 years’ experience in marketing and advertising gained on global brands, Caroline joined Norwich BID in 2018 to help shape the city-wide brand strategy for Norwich, the City of Stories. Having delivered re-brands and campaigns for Aviva, RAC, British Airways, Google, Barclaycard and more recently, Liftshare, her focus has been to bring businesses, communities and the tourism sector together to help put Norwich on the map.

Caroline lives in Wymondham with husband Dan and children Jake and Casper, along with the new addition to the family, their Tibetan Terrier, Woody. A keen weaver (pure coincidence they live in a weaver’s cottage), knitter, dyer and slow stitch fan, Caroline loves learning arts with others and creating one-off pieces.

Describe yourself in three words? Creative, social, doer.

What was your first job? Working in a jeans store where I had to know the fit of about 400 styles. I got a great buzz helping people get the perfect jeans when they hated jeans shopping. I can fit a mean turn-up too. I still have a Levi’s shirt from (gulp) 26 years ago.

What frustrates you? Negativity.

How do you spend your leisure time? With the family, we’ll get out and about, either into Norwich or by the coast; we’ll try to persuade Woody to play in the sea but he’s still afraid of the water. Personally, I love a creative course and do about 3-4 a year. Next up is to study the impact of arts and wellbeing, which I’m a big believer in.

What’s your favourite television programme? Just finished Killing Eve (love a thriller), but my favourite watch is ‘What do artists do all day?’. I’m just nosy.

What’s your favourite food? Also, my favourite word: ‘smorgasbord’ of tapas tasting dishes, our go-to for New Year’s Eve.

What food do you hate? Eggs. Just. Can’t. Stand. The. Smell. Why would you?

What is your biggest weakness? Liberty London. I recently found out my great, great aunt was a designer there, so a love of pattern is in the blood.

Where are you happiest? At home with my boys (all four of them).

What was the first record you bought? Wham! Make it Big.

At school, what were you good at? Art. Maths. Biology. I’m a weird mix but have learnt to celebrate that.

What one material thing could you not do without? Wool and knitting needles (can I have two?).

You’d go to a fancy-dress party as? Calamity Jane.

What poster did you have on your bedroom wall as a child? Morten Harket from A-ha.

How many attempts before you passed your driving test? Third time lucky.
